Do Syria Citizens Need a Visa for Iraq in 2026?
Syrian citizens MUST obtain a visa to enter Federal Iraq (Baghdad, Basra, Najaf, etc.). The visa must be pre-arranged by a sponsor or tour agency in Iraq who applies to the Ministry of Interior in Baghdad for approval. IMPORTANT EXCEPTION: The Kurdistan Region of Iraq (Erbil, Sulaymaniyah) operates its own electronic visa system for Syrians, which is fast and easy, but this e-Visa is NOT valid for traveling into Federal Iraq.
Step-by-Step Application Process
Determine Destination
Decide if you are visiting Kurdistan only, or Federal Iraq (Baghdad, etc.).
Apply via Sponsor
For Federal Iraq: Your Iraqi sponsor applies for MoI approval. For Kurdistan: Apply for the KRG e-Visa online.
Receive Approval & Travel
Travel with the printed approval or KRG e-Visa and pay the fee at the border.
Required Documents
- —Syrian passport valid for at least 6 months
- —Official Visa Approval Letter from the Ministry of Interior (for Federal Iraq)
- —KRG e-Visa printout (if visiting Kurdistan only)
- —Passport-sized photographs
- —Confirmed hotel booking or sponsor details
- —Cash for the visa fee at the border (approx. 50-80 USD)
Important Tips
- •A visa issued by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) absolutely DOES NOT allow you to pass internal checkpoints into Federal Iraq (Baghdad). Attempting this is illegal.
- •For religious tourism (Ziyarat) to Najaf or Karbala, it is best to apply through an established Iraqi travel agency handling group visas.
- •Federal Iraq does not offer a simple e-Visa to Syrians; the pre-approval process by a local sponsor is strictly enforced.
- •Always carry crisp US Dollar bills for border and visa fees, as cards are rarely accepted.
Easiest Way to Get It
For Erbil/Sulaymaniyah, the KRG e-Visa is very easy. For Federal Iraq, applying through a registered Iraqi religious/tourism agency is the most reliable method.
